Dental exams and cleanings are the things we do during regular check-ups here at Union Ave Dental in Pueblo, Colorado. One of our most consistent recommendations to patients is that they need to come in for check-ups at least twice a year or every six months. This applies to adults. How often a child has to come in might be more frequent.
These check-up visits are considered preventive. They allow us to keep teeth in their best state and to catch infections or decay in early stages before significant damage begins. At Union Ave Dental, we understand that people don’t like going to the dentist. That’s why we put effort into making our office a comfortable and relaxing place.
During your exam, we’ll inspect and palpate your mouth for any irregularities. We’ll also use our tools to assess your teeth. We start by looking for stains, build-up, decay, signs of inflammation, masses, and discoloration. The next part of our assessment includes using our fingers and tools.
We’ll need to feel under your tongue and around your oral cavity to check for masses or ulcers, which could indicate cancer. Your teeth will be properly assessed for signs of infection or cavities. If a mass is detected, we’ll do a biopsy to determine what it is. The presence of a mass doesn’t mean cancer. Many biopsy results come back negative.
The cleanings we perform in the office are different from brushing your teeth and flossing at home. They’re more thorough, and we can use our tools to remove plaque and tartar, which can’t be removed at home.
Regularly removing plaque and tartar is good for dental health. These hardened build-ups contain bacteria that are protected from toothpaste and mouthwash. Removing build-up means removing bacteria and possible sources of future infection.
At your regular check-up, we’ll also assess any prior dental work you had done. This includes crowns, fillings, braces, implants, bridges, or others. If they’re in good shape, we’ll leave them as is. If something needs repairing, then we’ll take care of it for you.
